Hey there. Have you ever felt like you're never taken seriously? I certainly do! My brothers tease me all the time and people make stupid jokes about me. Sometimes humans should learn to take things seriously, especially when it involves their own lives.
"Come on, this is ridiculous!"
"I don't even know your name and you're telling me that I'm going to become a king!"
"My name's-"
"Get out of my room!"
"Call me Dusty."
"Fine. Dusty, get the hell out of my room!"
Dusty sat on the man's bed and folded her hands on her lap. Her long orange hair was pulled back in a braid and her eyes were the most beautiful shade of green. Her long dress matched the Medieval time period she was currently in and her wooden staff was hidden from human eyes. Only witches and wizards could see them but that's why she usually avoided them when she had the time. The man, on the other hand, wasn't quite as calm. He paced back and forth, occasionally glaring at her. His short brown hair and grey eyes were attractive but apparently his brother was supposed to be even better looking. He wore a ruby red tunic and black leggings and the sword he normally wore at his hip was laying across a nearby table.
"I'm telling you," Dusty sighed. "You're going to be king of this land once your father dies."
"It's impossible," the man snapped. "My older brother will inherit the position. He may not be the most intelligent of our family but he has a strong sense of justice."
"Oh don't worry about your brother," I laughed. "He's going to die soon anyways. I'm sure one of my own brothers are on their way here right now to finish him off."
Ok, so I probably shouldn't have told him that his brother was about to die. It was probably even worse that I told him one of my own brothers was going to kill the guy. Like I said before though, sometimes people just don't take me seriously. I have never understood why.
"I'm sure it will be Fate," Dusty continued without missing a beat. "He's the best at making things painless. Chance tends too have a little too much fun with the deaths he creates."
"What are you talking about?" the man roared. "Fate? Chance? What sort of nonsense have your parents been forcing into your mind? Why the hell are you still in my room?"
"Oh will you sit down and shut up! You should be preparing yourself to be king, not yelling at me." Dusty spouted. "What is your name, anyways?"
"Edmund," the man replied. "I'm calling the guards."
"I believe your brother just died of-" Dusty paused and tilted her head as if listening for something. Then she nodded. "He died of food poisoning. Definitely Fate's doing. I wonder where Chance has been."
Dusty jumped up from the bed just as people started yelling in the halls. They both looked to the door as soon as it swung open. A page rushed in, his face pale. His uniform was covered in blood and when Edmund saw this he rushed over to the man.
I try to tell people that things are going to happen but I also try to help them stay focused on their new goals. It's terribly difficult considering humans are almost as stubborn as I am. But I suppose it's my job. After all, I help people understand their purpose in life.
"Sir," the page gasped. "You must come! Your brother has been killed!"
Edmund looked back at Dusty for just a brief moment before rushing out of the room. Dusty followed at a slower pace, wondering why the page had been covered in blood. Once she caught up to Edmund she was surprised to find that both of her brothers had been there.
It's very uncommon to see Fate and Chance in one place at the same time. They don't get along at all. Well, I shouldn't say that. They have an understanding and very rarely work together on principal. I think they're both great as long as they don't interfere with what I'm doing.
The man was laying face down at the bottom of the stairs. He had died of a fatal head injury probably caused by falling down the stairs once he was poisoned.
"Huh," Dusty muttered to herself. "Usually Fate doesn't make things this bloody. I wonder if Chance made him angry. Maybe Chance just pushed the guy down the stairs for the fun of it."
Dusty watched Edmund cry over his dead brother's body. Eventually someone had to drag him away to another room so that they could clean things up. Dusty waited until the crowd was gone and made her way back to where Edmund had been left. Before she entered a man touched her arm.
"You shouldn't go in there, miss," he said. "Sir Edmund is very upset right now."
Dusty smiled and curtseyed to the man. She could see what would become of the man as if it was written in words above his head.
"Thank you, sir," she murmured. "You are a kind man for warning me about such things. May your days be long and your family be untroubled."
The man seemed surprised at her response but thanked her and went on his way. Dusty turned back to the door and opened it slowly. She peeked in and found Edmund staring out a tall window.
"I thought he was going to die of food poisoning," Dusty sighed. "I'm sorry it turned out like this."
Edmund didn't respond or say anything so Dusty closed the door behind her and walked over to stand behind him.
Usually this part is where they blame me for what happened. Unfortunately I only deliver messages and partake in the happier parts of life. It's Chance and Fate that do the dirty work.
"You did this," Edmund snarled. "You knew what was going to happen."
"Well I told you and gave you fair warning," Dusty scoffed. "But do not worry. He lived an honorable life and he will be remembered for a long time. You'll be a good ruler for your people so that won't be a problem."
Dusty raised the staff that she knew Edmund couldn't see.
This is my least favorite part but sometimes it must be done if for no other reason than to protect myself. You see, I have no protection other than my staff. Fate has his armor and weapons, Chance, well I don't really know what he has but he hasn't died yet so he must have something.
Before Edmund had a chance to turn and look at her, Dusty swung her staff and hit him in the back of the head. He fell to the ground but made no noise because Dusty used her magic to cushion his fall. She lowered him to the ground and then knelt next to him.
"Sorry about that," she sighed. "I don't want to have to run away though. It's much easier to leave without someone chasing me."
She used her magic to erase all memory of herself from Edmund's mind. All she left behind for him was the certainty and strength he needed to become king.
"Well, I had better go," Dusty murmured. "Hope we don't have to come find you again, Edmund. I had fun today!"
Dusty picked up her staff and slipped out the door to find her brothers. Edmund would wake back up in a few minutes.
Oh, you have probably figured it out by now but my name is Destiny. I make sure the lives of humans follow the course set for them and it's quite fun except for the occasional sudden deaths. Even that doesn't bother me anymore though because I know their souls travel to another world and begin a new life. I don't really know where these souls go but I'm told it's just to another place in time. Who knows, maybe I will see them again someday in one of these human worlds.
